CALGARY- Call it a sign of the times. A major hotel has been announced in the Beltline—the biggest of its kind in the entire country.
The Marriott group is building a 33-storey, 360 room long-stay Residence Inn, at 10th Avenue and 6 St. S.W. where the Alberta Boot Company used to be.
The project is valued at over $100 million, and will also feature a 10,000 square foot conference space.
“This will be a world class facility, we are going to invest a spectacular amount of money…to make this the best hotel in the downtown urban core,” says Steve Giblin, CEO of SilverBirch Hotels and Resorts, who is also behind the project. “These rooms will be beautiful, they will be expertly appointed.”
The company says they have been trying to build a long-stay facility in Calgary for a decade.
“The timing from a construction point of view is right given what is happening here in the Beltline, so it’s been worth the wait,” says Michael Beckley, VP of Marriott Hotels of Canada. “We could have done the wrong thing in the wrong place, and 360 rooms puts this one up alongside Chicago, San Francisco and New York in terms of this type of brand.”
A second tower on the site will also be home to 300 rental apartments.
The new hotel is just one of three new ones planned for the area. Construction on the Residence Inn is expected to begin next year, and is scheduled to open in 2016.
