Court heard Wednesday it took eight months to get the toxicology report back because of a backlog at the lab.

Results showed McKinnon, who died in February, overdosed after the two men got into a fight.

Maier pled guilty to assault and was given time served. He was released immediately, his lawyer said.

This would subtract one from the city’s homicides list, which means there have been 19 homicides in Winnipeg in 2013 instead of 20.
