MONTREAL – A 44-year-old woman is facing a single charge of impaired driving causing death after a 57-year-old cyclist was struck and killed Saturday night on a roadway in the small town of Val Morin, about 92 kilometres northwest of Montreal.
Jacques Michaud, a resident of Val Morin, was pedalling along Route 117, also known as Labelle Blvd., around 8 p.m. when he was hit from behind. He died in hospital a short time later.
According to Sûreté du Québec Sgt. Richard Gagné, Michaud’s family was only informed of his death on Sunday morning because he was not carrying any identification, making it impossible to immediately determine his age or his name.
The unidentified female driver failed a Breathalyzer test shortly after the accident, Gagné said. She is expected to appear in court Monday.
Meanwhile, investigators are still trying to determine exactly what caused a violent, head-on collision in Lavaltrie in the early hours of Saturday morning that claimed the lives of three people in their 20s.
The victims have been identified as Tommy Baribeau, 23, Patricia Pelletier Roux, 20, and Marie-Lyne Vaes, 22. All three were from Lavaltrie.
According to Gagné, alcohol was not a factor in that accident, but speed or a driver falling asleep may have played a role. It was also raining heavily when the crash occured, he added, which could have caused one of the drivers to lose control.
A Facebook memorial page was set up Saturday for the two female victims, and messages of condolence poured in steadily over the weekend.
