VERNON — A black bear that wandered into Vernon’s downtown Wednesday morning picked the wrong area to stroll the sidewalks and the wrong tree to head up.
Just before 4 a.m., a police officer spotted the animal on 35th Avenue, then saw it go up a tree across the street from the RCMP detachment.

Officers watched for nearly an hour then, given the nearness to the commercial core and an elementary school, decided without conservation available the risk was too great.
An officer used one shot from his handgun to bring the bear down.
It’s described as a two-year-old 200 pounder.
