Durham Regional Police told Global News they responded to a call around 5:35 p.m. to a residential home in the area of Kingston and Westney roads in the Town of Ajax.

An 83-year-old man was found with significant and obvious signs of trauma, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbours identified the victim as Patrick Larter to Global News and described him as a quiet senior who loved to tend to his garden.

In an update, police said they arrested 40-year-old John Larter, an Ajax resident. Multiple neighbours also said Lartner was the victim’s son.

John Larter was charged with second-degree murder.

Police also said the suspect and the victim both knew each other and that this was an isolated incident.
