September housing starts up in Saskatoon

September housing starts in Saskatoon increase from previous month, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. File / Global News

SASKATOON – Housing starts in the Saskatoon census metropolitan area (CMA) were up in September, according to preliminary numbers released by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

September starts were at 614 units compared to 288 the previous month. In September 2012, there were 485 starts.

Broken down, there were 203 new single detached homes started along with 411 multiple family units last month in the Bridge City.

Three-quarters of the way through 2013, 2,367 homes have been started in Saskatoon compared to 2,590 in the same period last year.

Urban housing starts in Saskatchewan during September led all provinces, increasing by 23.4 per cent on a year-over-year basis. Canada’s urban housing starts were down 12.3 per cent.

“When you combine a growing population and a growing economy, it adds up to the need and demand for new housing,” said Saskatchewan Economy Minister Bill Boyd.

“Our construction industry is an important component of the Saskatchewan economy. It creates jobs and builds communities that benefit families across the province.”

CMHC’s preliminary housing starts for Canada in September were at 15,451, compared to 17,617 units in September 2012.
