SASKATOON – A Saskatoon mother whose apple tree was stripped bare recently got a pleasant surprise from out-of-province on Sunday.

Doris Lemke’s 22-year-old son has a form of stomach cancer which makes it impossible for him to digest many foods.

She had planned on using the apples from the tree in their front yard to make apple sauce for him.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

But before she got the chance to pick the fruit, she discovered that they had all been taken one night last month.

Lemke took to Kijiji, writing a letter to whoever plucked the plentiful apples. The ad quickly garnered several thousand views.

Kelowna-based BC Tree Fruits caught wind of the story and sent Lemke a box of juicy gala apples over the weekend.

“That’s just incredible kindness that somebody would do, it’s a treasure,” said Lemke.

“I’ve had lots of little things dropped off at my door, bags of crab apples, even cookbooks which are really cool because after my daughter died I had a little stroke and I’ve forgotten how to do some things, especially cooking.”

People have already offered Lemke farm vegetables and one man even gave her a gift certificate for groceries.
