Edmonton – It wasn’t a typical setting for voters to meet political candidates.
While enjoying food and drinks at a downtown establishment Sunday night, voters chatted with Edmonton’s council and mayoral candidates at a ‘PoliTweetup.’
“It’s very casual. You can almost have a very, like almost like an intimate conversation with a politician,” says organizer Tamara Vineberg.
Aside from the atmosphere, Vineberg calls the event unique for another reason.
“It’s not often that the school board candidates, the city council candidates, and the mayoral candidates are all in one room together.”
Judging by Twitter comments, Sunday’s ‘Tweet Up’ was a success.
The event was advertised primarily on Twitter, through the hashtag ‘yegvote.’
It’s the second time Vineberg has organized a ‘PoliTweetup.’ She coordinated a similar event prior to Edmonton’s last municipal election in 2010.
Vineberg says her brainchild has inspired other ‘PoliTweetups’ in the Capital Region.
“This PoliTweetup has inspired, there was one in Sherwood Park that did a similar, and I also heard there would be one in Spruce Grove.”
