WINNIPEG – Police are asking the public to help them find a man who beat a bus driver who wouldn’t give him a transfer unless he paid for a ride.
Police released surveillance photos Wednesday of a transit rider who refused to pay the fare and then assaulted a driver.
The man, described as aboriginal, about 25 years old and six feet tall with a slim build and short dark hair, got on an eastbound city bus on William Avenue near Isabel Street on Sept. 14 at about 12:30 p.m., police said.
He didn’t pay his fare but demanded a transfer from the 50-year-old driver.
He then assaulted the driver for two or three minutes, causing non-life-threatening injuries, and only stopped when two other men got on the bus to try to stop him.
One of the two men who tried to help the bus driver was also assaulted by the fare cheat, who eventually got off the bus.
The confrontation between the fare cheat and the other men continued outside the bus.
Police ask anyone with information about the identity of the fare cheat call investigators at 204-986-6668 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
