SASKATOON – SaskEnergy wants to make sure people ‘call before you dig.’

So far this year, 175 natural gas lines have been hit in the province, most of them since May.

Over half of those have been in backyards, particularly in new subdivisions where decks and fences are being constructed.

SaskEnergy says it’s important to call ahead to locate the underground lines and to dig at least one metre away from a marked line when using excavation equipment.

“When you look at 175 incidents, any of those could have resulted in serious injuries or fatalities,” said spokesperson Dave Burdeniuk.

“We’re really trying to urge people to slow down, plan the projects carefully because the danger is there.”

A hit could cause an explosion, putting neighbourhoods and first responders at risk.
