SASKATOON – After eliciting strong reactions from across the country, an alleged hazing incident near the town of Lanigan, Sask. has prompted the Saskatchewan premier to speak out.
“It’s very disturbing, especially in light of the amount of public discussion and – I hope – increased public awareness around some of the bullying issues,” said Wall on Tuesday in Saskatoon.
RCMP have confirmed that nine male youths and two 18-year-old men are facing a total of 39 charges – among them, assault with a weapon.
The incident involved grades nine and ten students from Lanigan Central High School being initiated at a so-called “freshie” party about two miles outside of the town.
The initiators were senior students from the same school.
While some students allegedly endured being drenched with chocolate syrup, flour and eggs, others were paddled.
Police say a modified hockey goaltender’s stick was used to assault the victims, who are all male.
RCMP are aware of five victims, but say there may be more.
One of the victims suffered muscle damage to his leg and buttocks.
“I’m an imperfect dad, imperfect parent. I’m not going to presume to give any other parent advice – just to say we all need to do a better job with our kids,” said Wall.
The premier has tasked Saskatoon Fairview MLA Jennifer Campeau with reporting on anti-bullying strategies.
It will help shape the development of an anti-bullying initiative for the province.
