Trust, flood mitigation top concerns in High River election

CALGARY- The embattled town of High River is in for a leadership change, just a few months after the June floods devastated their community.

Current mayor Emile Blockland is not running for his job again—instead, he’s running for town council. That’s left the race wide open for two candidates.

One is Jamie Kinghorn, who is currently a town councillor. The other is Craig Snodgrass, a businessman born and raised in High River.

Both say they’ve had the advantage of seeing leadership in action, both in the height and aftermath of the flood, and admit winning back the trust of residents is the biggest challenge.

“That’s the biggest obstacle,” says Kinghorn. “I was on council during the flood as most know, and saw what I did in the flood and supported what I was doing.”

Snodgrass adds that protecting the town is also a major issue.

“River mitigation is number one…to instill the confidence that what happened on June 20th will never happen again,” he says.

The election will be held on October 21.
