SASKATOON – The federal and provincial governments are making a significant investment into agricultural research.
On Friday, they announced $17.25 million in funding over the next five years for 13 strategic agriculture research chairs at the University of Saskatchewan.
The money will be used to help researchers develop new crops, expand knowledge and enhance technologies to grow the industry.
“This investment in human capital will go a long way in attracting even more cutting-edge agricultural research here in Saskatchewan,” said federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz.
Included is funding for the creation of a new forage research chair, which came about after feedback from industry groups.
The money was provided under the province’s strategic research program which was introduced in 1986 through a series of five-year agreements.
A recent evaluation of the program by KPMG found they produce nine dollars in benefits to producers for every dollar invested by the provincial government.
