Leeds OPP has identified one-year-old Samara Holmes as the victim of Tuesday night’s house fire near the village of Westport.
Crews with Rideau Lakes Fire and Rescue responded to a call for a structure fire on Concession Road 9 at approximately 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. Two firefighters were injured when the ceiling of the home collapsed.
Leeds OPP say a body was located inside the home once the fire was extinguished.
The identity of the young girl was confirmed on Thursday after a post-mortem was conducted.
OPP Sgt. Cynthia Savard says that while police are investigating, it is not a criminal investigation as the fire is not considered suspicious.
According to Savard, there was one adult in the house when the blaze erupted.
The adult was able to get two other children out of the burning house, but was forced out by heavy smoke when trying to re-enter for the one-year-old child.
A GoFundMe has been set up in an effort to support the family. Raising over $23,000 in the first 24 hours, it had an initial goal of $5,000.
