RCMP in Yukon arrest suspect after shooting, ‘multiple’ people injured

Police in Yukon have arrested a possible suspect after reports of a shooting in the town of Faro that left several people injured, according to the incoming mayor.

In a statement on Tuesday, the RCMP said it had received reports of shots fired in Faro just past 1 p.m. local time (4 p.m. E.T.).

“Police immediately responded and an individual has now been apprehended. The threat has ended,” RCMP said.

It urged residents to stay away from Harper Street, Yates Street, Tintina Subdivision and anywhere with a police presence.

“The police investigation is developing and significant first responder and police presence continues in Faro,” the statement added.

The incoming mayor of Faro, Jack Bowers, said he can confirm there were “multiple injuries” from the “active shooting”, but he did not say how many people had been injured.

Bowers was scheduled to be sworn-in as mayor on Tuesday afternoon when news of the shooting came in. A council meeting scheduled for Tuesday night was postponed until next week.

Earlier, in a tweet at 4.57 p.m. E.T., Yukon RCMP alerted that all persons in Faro needed to shelter in place.

It later rescinded that order, saying: “Please be advised that there will be an increased RCMP presence in the area.”

Faro is a small town in central Yukon, with a population of roughly 400 people.
