Calgary election 2021: Who won in Ward 10?

Andre Chabot is projected to win back his councillor seat for Ward 10.

Chabot — who represented the eastern ward for more than a decade before an unsuccessful run for mayor in 2017 — replaced Ray Jones, who retired in 2020.

In the interim, councillors George Chahal and Gian-Carlo Carra have stepped in to represent the ward.

Here’s a look at the 11 candidates running for the Ward 10 seat in the 2021 election, in alphabetical order.

Andre Chabot

Chabot isn’t a stranger to Calgary voters, as a former longtime councillor, and a name on the ballot in the 2017 mayoral race.

If elected again, Chabot will focus on advocating for current city services to be maintained, while avoiding tax increases.

Roshan Chumber

Chumber is a small business owner and real estate professional, living and raising his family in northeast Calgary, who has a passion for giving back to his community.

If elected, Chumber’s priorities would include supporting small businesses, protecting seniors and improving public safety.

Tony Dinh

Dinh was born and raised in Calgary’s Ward 10, and now works as an entrepreneur in the city.

If elected, Dinh’s goals include reexamining city spending priorities like Stephen Avenue and a new arena, freezing municipal taxes and growing the film and tech industries.

Carla Evers

If elected, Evers has promised to hold the city accountable on spending of taxpayers’ money, save money by finding ways to eliminate unnecessary studies and surveys, and end COVID-19 lockdowns.

Abed Harb

Harb was born and raised in Ward 10, and is now raising his children there. He has more than 20 years of experience volunteering and working in his community.

If elected to city council, Harb would prioritize investing in parks and Calgary Transit infrastructure, improving policing and community safety, and establishing more affordable housing.

Leslyn Joseph

Joseph hopes to bring her strong voice of diversity to council. As a self-identified Black woman, Joseph said she wants to see more diversity and trust in municipal politics.

As a councillor, Joseph would prioritize funding for services tailored to seniors, youth and families and the BIPOC community in the city, as well as try to find new housing solutions.

Mushtaq Kayani

Kayani is community-oriented, serving as a member of a number of social and volunteer organizations in Calgary, and hopes to bring that experience to city hall this fall.

If elected, Kayani would support small businesses to foster economic recovery, cut taxes and unnecessary spending by city hall, and work to expedite the city’s LRT projects.

Jasbir (Jesse) Minhas

Minhas is running to represent Ward 10. No campaign information was available as of publishing.

Issa Mosa

Mosa is running to represent Ward 10. No campaign information was available as of publishing.

Esther Sutherland

Sutherland is a former nurse who is very involved in her community and gives back where she can, including delivering hampers of goods to those in need.

If elected to city council, Sutherland work would focus on affordable housing for seniors, supporting the Calgary Fire Department and lowering taxes.

Bud Thurlow

Thurlow has been a Ward 10 resident for 37 years, and has worked in the natural gas sector as well as an entrepreneur in the city.

If elected, Thurlow hopes to bring his years of experience in the business world to city hall to make changes on things like spending, property taxes and transparency on council.

In total, 27 people are running for mayor and there are 100 candidates for city council. Eighteen people are running to become Calgary Catholic School Board trustees, while 38 people are running to become Calgary Board of Education trustees.

Election day is Monday, Oct. 18.
