A spokesperson for emergency services says there were no serious injuries following a reported partial collapse of the Highway 406 off-ramp at Geneva Street in St. Catharines.
The incident happened just after 11:30 a.m. Friday morning, according to Niagara EMS Supt. Mayram Traub.
The roadway was scheduled for demolition and undergoing a planned construction phase when part of it came down injuring a worker inside an excavator that rolled over during the episode.
“EMS assessed one person, who refused transport to hospital. We have cleared the scene,” Traub told Global News.
The Ministry of Labour has confirmed to Global News that two investigators were dispatched to the site.
“It was reported workers were removing the concrete deck from a bridge when the deck buckled and collapsed,” ministry spokesperson Kalem McSween said in an e-mail.
Traffic on the 406 was not impacted by the incident.
The company contracted for the roadway repairs is Rankin Construction, according to investigators.
