Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said the call came in around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the four-storey building at 802 Main St.

“On arrival, they mounted an offensive attack, meaning they went into the building,” said Tom Wallace, Deputy Chief.

“But by the time they got to the third floor, the heat and the smoke was too much. So they retreated, and since that time, we’ve been mounting a defensive attack from the outside of the building.”

Wallace said no one was in the building at the time and firefighters are all unharmed.

At 7:45 a.m. smoke was still billowing out of the building and a fresh ladder truck was rotated in.
