Calgary election 2021: Who won in Ward 2?

Global News is projecting Jennifer Wyness will win the seat in Ward 2, where incumbent Joe Magliocca was seeking a third term to represent the northwest Calgary ward.

The ward boundaries remain largely the same for the October election, and now all of Royal Vista is in neighbouring Ward 1.

Here’s a quick look at the six candidates running for council in Ward 2, in alphabetical order.

Francis Aranha

A first generation Indian-Canadian, Aranha works in hospitality management for a large catering company. He is also an active volunteer for a wide variety of initiatives.

Aranha’s platform has three main planks: fiscal responsibility, youth empowerment and supporting local business.

Joe Magliocca

First elected to council in 2013, Magliocca announced his bid for re-election in early September. Prior to becoming a councillor, Magliocca amassed private sector experience in construction and airlines.

Magliocca was involved in an expenses scandal for more than $16,000 in travel to Federation of Canadian Municipalities events, funds that he repaid to the city.

Magliocca promises to cut city spending, build out roads and parks infrastructure, and reduce taxes.

Sareen Singh

Singh is an active member of a number of university-related organizations, including with Tech Start UCalgary, the Calgary Social Value Fund and Student Voice Initiative Calgary. Singh says those experiences have given him insight on challenges in the city and paths forward.

Singh wants to lower taxes for small business while increasing them for international enterprises. He also wants to lower taxes in suburban Calgary while also offering tax incentives to “social impact organizations.” He also wants to improve the city’s transit and parks networks.

Kim Tyers

A political science graduate from the University of Calgary, Tyers has worked on a number of boards and political associations. She was also a constituency assistant to MP Michelle Rempel-Garner.

In her press release announcing her campaign in October 2020, Tyers called on Ward 2 Coun. Joe Magliocca to resign.

In 2017, Tyers ran unsuccessfully to be a public school trustee in Wards 3 and 4, receiving 25 per cent of the votes.

Tyers seeks to improve fiscal responsibility, accountability, transparency and reduce taxes for suburban homeowners. She also wants to introduce snow removal in neighbourhood streets

Theo van Besouw

With a history in mechanical engineering, van Besouw has lived and worked in Alberta, B.C., Ontario and Nevada. Van Besouw, an immigrant from the Netherlands, returned to Calgary to become an engineering consultant and became involved in non-profit work.

He hopes to balance the city’s budget, encourage innovation, improve transparency and promote social justice efforts.

Jennifer Wyness

A public relations professional, Wyness has worked with public health, recreation and political organizations.

In 2017, Wyness ran in Ward 2 and came in second, behind then-incumbent Joe Magliocca by more than 3,100 votes. In 2019, Wyness was the Alberta Party’s candidate in Calgary-Foothills, where she came in third with 7.8 per cent of the vote.

Wyness wants to improve fiscal responsibility, accountability, transparency, and efficacy of city services. She also wants to develop “cluster plans,” modeled after New York’s theatre district and Boston’s 128 high tech corridor, for Calgary neighbourhoods and businesses.

In total, 27 people are running for mayor and there are 100 candidates for city council. Eighteen people are running to become Calgary Catholic School Board trustees, while 38 people are running to become Calgary Board of Education trustees.

Election day is Monday, Oct. 18.
