Broadcasting the Shaw Charity Classic a major production

CALGARY- Everything is in place at Canyon Meadows Golf Course, in anticipation of the first tee off at the Shaw Charity Classic.

America’s Golf Channel rolled into town to provide full coverage, bringing a mobile studio, a dozen cameras and 75 crew members.

Producer Brandt Packer says broadcasting golf is a special challenge.

“If you do another sport—hockey, baseball—they’re one ball, one puck. [With golf] there’s 18 holes, a guy on the green and on the fairway.”

The Golf Channel will broadcast into hundreds of thousands of homes, from Friday to Sunday. The host says his crew can already feel the excitement.

“Canadian golf fans are crazy about the sport, and we’ll see that with the number of people that show up here this weekend,” says Brian Hammons.

Selling Calgary to the world is also a goal for tournament organizers, made easier by the arrival of the big names competing.

“Freddy Couples moves the needle,” says Packer. “On every tour you have that person. You have Tiger, Phil and Rory, you have Michelle Wie. This tour it’s Freddy. He doesn’t play every week, but when he does, it’s special.”
