Canada has captured its 13th medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after winning bronze at the women’s 4×100-metre medley relay finals.
Penny Oleksiak, who anchored as freestyle in her leg, won the seventh Olympic medal of her career — historically marking the 21-year-old as Canada’s most decorated Olympian.
24-year-old Sydney Pickrem swam breaststroke and also picked up her first medal. Maggie Mac Neil, who swam butterfly, and Kylie Masse in backstroke picked up their third medal.
Mac Neil, 21, had secured Canada’s first gold medal of the Tokyo Olympics while Masse, 25, won her previous two silvers in the 100m and 200m backstroke finals.
The four finished with a time of 3:52.60, breaking their previous national record set after winning bronze at the 2019 FINA World Championships. The United States nabbed silver while Australia finished first with a new Olympic record of 3:51.60.
Following their win, Canada’s women swim team has now amassed a total of six medals in Tokyo — as many as it won in the Rio 2016 Olympics. Seven Canadian records were also broken by the swim team.
“Trust me at the top it isn’t lonely,” wrote Oleksiak in a tweet shortly following her team’s bronze win.
