Danny Fernandes making music without help from Shawn Desman

TORONTO — Don’t assume Danny Fernandes owes his music career to older brother Shawn Desman, whose hits include “Shiver” and “Night Like This.”

“A lot of people think he had a lot to do with my music career but he really didn’t have anything to do with it,” Fernandes, 27, said Tuesday during an appearance on Global Toronto’s The Morning Show.

“We’re brothers and we love each other but we don’t really speak about music,” he added. “He’ll do what he does and I’ll do what I do.”

Fernandes is performing at Toronto’s CNE on Tuesday to promote his third studio album, Breathe Again. The first single is “Fly Again (Broken Wings),” which borrows melody and lyrics from Mr. Mister’s 1985 hit “Broken Wings.”

Fernandes said the album was inspired by the end of a relationship.

“That break-up was a rough time for me,” he explained. “It’s a personal situation that I was going through for the last few years,” he explained. “I kind of just put it all into that record. It helped a lot.”

Part of the healing process involved a change of scenery so Fernandes went to Los Angeles for about a year before returning to Toronto to record the album.

“I needed to get out of Canada and be away from everything,” he said.

During his appearance on The Morning Show, Fernandes also talked about why he is obsessed with Mickey Mouse and why he decided to cover his body with tattoos.

“They all have meaning to them,” he said. “It’s come to the point where I have so many [so] why stop now?”
