Three former members of the UBC Thunderbirds football team have been charged with an alleged sexual assault near the university’s Vancouver campus in 2018.
University RCMP said they were called to a residence on Acadia Road around 4:30 a.m., on Nov. 5, where a woman reported she’d been sexually assaulted by three men.
Following an investigation led by the B.C. RCMP’s Major Crime Section, police say Trivel Pinto, 25, Tremont Levy, 26, and Ben Cummings, 24, have all been charged with one count of sexual assault.
Levy has also been charged with voyeurism, police said.
Pinto was signed by the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders in January.
“The Calgary Stampeders are aware of the situation involving Trivel Pinto and are currently gathering additional information,” the team said in a statement.
“As this is an ongoing legal matter, the team does not have further comment.”
In a statement, Ainsley Carry, UBC’s vice-president, students, said the accused were no longer students at the university.
“I would like to express our collective and deep concern for the wellbeing of those impacted by the alleged sexual assault off-campus on Nov. 5, 2018,” Carry said.
“UBC Athletics and the entire university are shocked and saddened by the allegations in this case.”
Carry added that all varsity athletes must sign on to a varsity code of conduct, and that all athletes must attend mandatory education sessions with the school’s Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office.
The trio are in police custody pending an upcoming Richmond court date.
