Liberal candidate Heath MacDonald is projected to win the P.E.I. riding of Malpeque, continuing the party’s hold on the centre of the province.
MacDonald claimed about 40 per cent of the vote, just seven points ahead of Conservative challenger Jody Sanderson — who improved on the party’s 2019 showing, where they placed third.
MacDonald will take over the seat from longtime MP Wayne Easter, who was first elected in the riding in 1988 and held it for a majority of the time since.
Easter announced in early June that he would not be running for the seat in the next election.
Prior to the Liberal’s reign in the area, the Progressive Conservatives were in power.
Malpeque covers central Prince Edward Island, which includes fishing villages and farmland.
