SASKATOON – City administration is hoping to change the criteria on when to replace broken water mains.
Currently, water mains are considered for replacement when 12 breaks have occurred over a 25 year period.
Officials are looking to change that to six over 25 years.

“Our analysis shows that after a water main breaks five times, the average time before the next break is two years and that it will continue to break every two years after that,” said Rob Frank, manager of the strategic services branch.
“Reducing the replacement criteria from 12 breaks to six will result in the reduction of long-term costs because we aren’t spending money to keep repairing the same water main over and over.”

Administration says making the change will meet customer expectations while reducing costs for water distribution and maintenance.
The report will go to city council on Wednesday for final approval.
