One man is dead from another brazen shooting at a busy park in Coquitlam Monday night.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has now been called in to take over the case.
Investigators said 20-year-old Bailey McKinney was shot near the skate park at Coquitlam’s Town Centre Park.
It happened around 6:30 p.m. when the park was filled with kids and families enjoying the warm weather.
No one else was hurt.
Sgt. Frank Jang with IHIT said McKinney was pronounced dead at the scene.
There is no word yet if the shooting is connected to the Lower Mainland gang conflict but Jang said it does not appear to be at this time.
The suspect has not been located, investigators said.
“We believe this was a targeted incident,” Jang said.
“We believe that people had reason to harm Bailey and that’s exactly what happened yesterday. They targeted him for murder and that’s exactly what happened.”
Jang said McKinney had some interactions with the police in the past and that he “had interactions” with someone or a number of people prior to his death. However, it is not known what he was doing at the park before the shooting.
Jang added that there were a lot of people around and it is very concerning to them.
IHIT is asking anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward and speak to them.
A vehicle has been removed from the scene and the park remains closed Tuesday.
IHIT is also still investigating a shooting that happened Saturday night in Vancouver’s Coal Harbour neighbourhood where one man was shot and killed.
