Remarkable numbers add up at The EX

SASKATOON – Wet weather couldn’t put a damper on day two of The Saskatoon EX as thousands rocked through the gates for kid’s day.

The largest summer event in Saskatchewan takes a lot to put together and when you take a closer look at the Ex by the numbers it’s remarkable.

It runs for six days from midday to midnight and it takes numbers to pull it all together.

“We have I believe it’s close to 70 concessionaires on site,” said Carl Schlosser, Prairieland Park Event director.

Bill Sumner is one of those concessionaires.

“I first played this fair in 1957 and I sold candy floss on a stick for 15 cents,” he said.

Over the week-long event, Bill’s concession alone will go through 3,000 bags of cotton candy and 2,500 apples.

45,000 cans of beer will be downed and around 60,000 of an EX staple – Spudnuts – will be sold.

On the thrill seekers end, the Sling Shot will fly into the air at least 700 times.

When asked how many people come off the ride not feeling so well, ride attendant Ryan says it’s not as many as you’d think.

“So far everyone’s been happy, everyone’s been good, no one has thrown up yet,” he said.

But day two of the EX was all about the little tikes, with a one ticket discount on all Kidsville rides.

Opening day saw 28,176 people through the gates, up 15 per cent on last year.

The damp conditions on Wednesday may have kept some fair goers away but the forecast is full of sunshine for the remaining four days of the EX.

Organizers hope to reach that number of 225,000 visitors come Sunday.
