CALGARY – The number of parking spots available on Stephen Avenue will be lower than usual over the next few months, due to a new pilot project.

The City of Calgary has replaced public parking on the 200 and 300 blocks of 8th Avenue S.W. with expanded taxi and no-stopping zones from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., seven days a week.

The pilot was launched on Tuesday, and will last for the next three months.

The aim of the project is to allow the street to be cleared more quickly when emergency vehicles need to get through.

Officials say congestion on Stephen Avenue at night, especially between 1 Street W and 3 Street W, combined with the narrow width of the roadway makes it especially hard for fire crews or EMS to get through.

In addition, officials hope the expanded taxi zones will make it easier and safer to catch a cab on Stephen Ave.

At the end of the pilot project, Calgary police and fire crews will let city officials know if the move improves access for their vehicles.
