The Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) in Burlington has reopened following a deadly collision early Tuesday.
The Ontario Provincial Police closed the QEW between Brant Street and Guelph Line due to a serious multi-vehicle crash involving four vehicles.
Emergency crews were called to the highway at around 5:54 a.m.
Const. Kevin Westhead from Burlington OPP said two women died and three others were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Westhead said a Mitsubishi car was travelling westbound along the QEW when for “unknown reasons” it crossed the centre median and collided with an Acura head-on in the eastbound lanes.
It then made contact with a Ford truck, Westhead said. A Honda then lost control due to the debris and rolled into the ditch but did not crash into any of the other vehicles, Westhead added.
He said the two deceased people are both women from the Mitsubishi.
OPP said shortly after 7:30 a.m. that investigators estimate a six- to eight-hour closure.
“We’re just trying our best right now to get the highway cleared of all the backlog and we’re just asking for the public’s patience,” Westhead said.
The highway was fully reopened just after 4 p.m.
