19-year-old man shot dead in East Vancouver in city’s 18th homicide of 2020

Vancouver police say a 19-year-old man was shot dead in the city’s 18th homicide of the year, Friday night.

The victim, who was found with gunshot wounds in the area of East 5th Avenue and Cassiar Street, has been identified as Vancouver resident Amar Najat Jalal.

Global News cameras captured the sound of a woman yelling “that’s my son” at the scene.

Paramedics and firefighters were unable to revive him.

Police were called to the area to reports of gunshots shortly after 8 p.m., and found a grey pickup truck fully engulfed in flames around the corner from the crime scene.

“Preliminary evidence indicates this vehicle could be connected to the shooting,” said VPD Const. Tania Visintin in a media release, Saturday.

Police believe the shooting was targeted.

 

 

Anyone with video shot in the area between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday is asked to contact Vancouver police or Crime Stoppers if they wish to remain anonymous.
