MONCTON – A former daycare operator in New Brunswick has pleaded not guilty to sexually abusing a young person.
Hedwidge Surette is accused of five offences including sexual assault, invitation to sexual touching and forcible confinement.
Police allege the incidents happened at a home-based daycare between the start of 2000 and the end of 2004 in Notre-Dame, north of Moncton.

Defence lawyer Eric Aucoin says Surette’s spouse, 64-year-old Ronald Gaudet, is facing the same charges but may never be healthy enough to make it to court because he’s in hospital battling cancer.

Surette will have a preliminary hearing in March and has elected to be tried by judge and jury if the court finds there’s enough evidence to proceed.
The 63-year-old woman has been released on bail.
