VICTORIA – A well-known group of superheros is leaving British Columbia and taking as much as $100 million in movie revenue with them.
Peter Leitch, the president of North Shore Studios, says “The Fantastic Four Reboot” has moved production to Louisiana because of the lucrative tax incentives offered in that state.
New Democrat MLA George Heyman says the B.C. government has succeeded in doing what no other super villain has and that’s to scare away the “Fantastic Four.”
During question period in the legislature, Heyman asked what the government was doing to make the industry more competitive with other North American jurisdictions.
Finance Minister Mike de Jong replied “holy corporate subsidy Batman,” and added that the B.C. government expected to pay $380 million in subsides in the next year to the industry.
The minister says the payouts keep going up because more film and TV work is coming to the province, but taxpayers can’t afford to pay endless subsidies.
