North Glenmore Park has been closed after a bear was spotted in the area.
The entrance to the parking lot on the west side of the park at 37 Street and 66 Avenue Southwest was blocked off on Monday evening with a yellow and red sign advising the public to “keep out” due to a “dangerous bear” in the vicinity.
The 84-hectare park borders the north side of the Glenmore Reservoir and is normally open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
In an email to Global News on Tuesday, a government spokesperson said Alberta Fish and Wildlife had received reports of black bear sightings in Calgary over the past few weeks in Discovery Ridge, Lakeview and North Glenmore Park.
“It was observed accessing garbage and compost cans, bird feeders and other attractants,” Ina Lucila said.
Lucila said officers closed off the entrance to North Glenmore Park in an attempt to find and tranquillize the bear.
“Officers were able to successfully immobilize and capture the bear this morning,” she said. “The bear is currently being assessed and monitored, and the plan is to relocate the bear to a more suitable natural area tomorrow.”
North Glenmore Park is home to both the Calgary Canoe Club and the Calgary Rowing Club.
