A two-year-old boy has died after being struck by a vehicle in Coquitlam, B.C., Monday night.

His 36-year-old mom was also hit and is still in hospital.

Neither speed nor impairment appear to be factors, Coquitlam RCMP said.

The driver did remain on the scene and is cooperating with the police, RCMP confirmed.

BC Emergency Health Services told Global News they received a call at about 6:34 p.m. with reports of pedestrians struck at Pinetree Way and Tantalus Court.

A black Mercedes could be seen parked near the intersection where the collision occurred.

“At this early stage this appears to be a tragic event without any indication of criminal behaviour or negligence,” Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with Coquitlam RCMP said in a release. “We’re asking that all parents be extra-careful to hold their children’s hands near busy streets, and for drivers to be extra-watchful for kids who may do something unexpected.”

Pinetree Way between Robson Drive to the south and Grizzly Place to the north were closed to traffic while RCMP investigated, and reopened as of 1:15 a.m. Tuesday.

CCIT investigators are still gathering witness statements and video, and if anyone was an eyewitness, contact the Coquitlam RCMP non-emergency number at 604-945-1550 and ask to speak to Traffic investigators (file 2020-27135).
