Decision Calgary: Ward 12 candidates

Ward 12 is in the city’s far southeast and includes the communities of Auburn Bay, Copperfield, Cranston, Douglasdale/Glen, McKenzie Lake, McKenzie Towne, New Brighton, Seton and the Shepard industrial area. According to the 2011 civic census, the ward had three of the five fastest growing communities in Calgary: Auburn Bay, New Brighton and Cranston.

Ward 12 is home to the South Calgary Health Campus.

FAST FACTS: The ward has the highest number of residents who drive to work alone and one of the highest employment rates.

Current Councillor: Shane Keating is seeking his second term.

THE CANDIDATES

SHANE KEATING (incumbent) was first elected in the 2010 civic election, replacing long-time alderman Ric McIver. He spent 18 years as a teacher and another 13 years as a school administrator/principal.

He sits on several civic committees, including the Police Commission, Transportation and Transit and Community and Protective Services.

Keating’s platform includes fiscal responsibility, more openness and transparency at city hall including more detailing of expenses and budgets, building the southeast LRT and ensuring recreational and other facilities in Ward 12 keep pace with the ward’s growth.

Keating has served with numerous community groups and associations. He co-founded Families in Remembrance of Military Members (FIRMM), after the death of his nephew in Afghanistan.

Kusie describes herself as a strong fiscal conservative who has advised senior government officials on cost saving practices.  Her campaign platform includes keeping property taxes in check by looking at other sources of revenue.
