Decision Calgary: Ward 11 candidates

Ward 11 includes the communities of Altadore, Bayview, Bel-Aire, Braeside, Britannia, Cedarbrae, CFB-Lincoln Park PMQ, Chinook Park, Eagle Ridge, Elbow Park, Elboya, Glenmore Park, Haysboro, Kelvin Grove, Kingsland, Lakeview, Lincoln Park, Mayfair, Meadowlark Park, North Glenmore Park, Oakridge, Palliser, Pump Hill, Rutland Park, Southwood and Windsor Park.

The ward is home to Chinook Centre, the Glenmore Reservoir, Heritage Park and Mount Royal University.

FAST FACT: Ward 11 has the most seniors in the city, 60 per cent of whom are women.

Current Councillor: Brian Pincott is seeking his third term.

THE CANDIDATES

BRIAN PINCOTT (incumbent)was first elected in 2007 and won the last election in 2010 in a close race with runner-up James Maxim. Pincott has worked in the theatre industry across Canada in a variety of roles.

A strong believer in the importance of diversifying Calgary’s economy, Pincott sits on the board of Calgary Economic Development. He also serves on a number of other city committees, including Planning and Urban Development and the Calgary Housing Company.

Pincott is a supporter of a pilot project in the Ward 11 community of Kingsland that allows residents to vote on how to spend revitalization money allotted to the community.

WAYNE FRISCH owns several businesses, including a computer software company. He has also worked in management in the IT sector. He led a the fight against a large cellphone tower in the community of Rutland Park and is the founder of CellTower.ca, a watchdog advocacy group. He believes meaningful change comes from the grass roots level.

Frisch ran in Ward 10 in the 2010 civic election, finishing last in a field of five candidates.

JAMES MAXIM, a businessperson in international trade and oil and gas exploration, finished a close second in Ward 10 in the 2010 election.

His priorities include the environment, budget control and the development of cultural and recreational facilities. He also supports increasing internal accountability and applying strict, recognized auditing standards at city hall and changing the status of councillors from audit committee members to observers only. He also supports introducing a policy that would return any provincial tax refund to the taxpayer and making plans to reduce the City of Calgary $3-billion debt.
