Damaged tiles removed at St. Lawrence area basketball court

TORONTO – It took volunteers and city officials just 20 minutes to remove damaged plastic tiles at a popular Toronto area basketball court after it was ripped up by a police cruiser during a suspect pursuit earlier this week.

The David Crombie Park court located near Front and Sherbourne Street was built three years ago after a $22,000 donation by Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment (MLSE).

It was destroyed Tuesday night after a police cruiser drove over the rubber court during a chase of an alleged drug dealer.

A video of the incident was posted on Youtube.

However, the court will remain in bare concrete for now. Funding to refurbish the court has not been worked out yet but a MLSE representative tells Global News it is willing to pay the full cost.

Some members of the community say the plastic tiles helped to reduce the noise created during the basketball games.
