MARKHAM, Ont. – Nine people are facing a total of 57 charges in a major drug bust in Markham, north of Toronto.
York Regional Police say their drugs and vice unit arrested the nine after executing six search warrants in connection with a drug investigation that’s been in the works since last year.
Police say one of the searches — at an industrial building in Toronto — turned up an indoor grow operation where officers seized almost 3,800 plants believed to be marijuana.

Raids on five homes in Toronto and Markham on Monday netted another 109 plants, along with eight kilograms of dried marijuana, 227 grams of psilocybin — also known as magic mushrooms — and smaller amounts of other drugs including hashish, heroin and ecstasy.
Police also seized $34,000 in cash and three vehicles valued at about $45,000.
The accused face charges including production of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and theft of electricity.
“What is interesting about this one is the variety of drugs seized,” said Sgt. Clint Whitney.
“Initially, this began as an investigation into the production of marijuana but as a result of following up on leads and executing search warrants in Markham and Toronto they encountered all these other types of drugs,” he said.
