According to Alberta Health Services, one person died on scene and two others were taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.

Police had no details about the crash itself other than that it occurred at about 8 p.m. They said in addition to bridge access being closed, Queen Elizabeth Park Road and Kinsmen Park Road were also affected.

The car was initially on fire, but crews got the flames under control and out quickly.

Several police cars, ambulances and fire trucks were also at the scene, along with the fire investigation and EPS major collision investigation buses.

A large number of vehicles being driven by people that were hoping to cross the bridge could be seen parked in the lanes just south of the bridge, waiting to move north.

Police directed traffic to turn around and go back up Walterdale Road and find alternate ways to cross the river.
