Tornado watches issued for southeast Saskatchewan, Manitoba in storm’s path

A system that has placed southeastern Saskatchewan on a tornado watch could affect southwestern Manitoba.

WINNIPEG — Western Manitoba could be in for another big storm as severe weather warnings are expected in southeastern Saskatchewan.

Tornado watches for Saskatchewan were put in place at around 9:30 a.m. as there is a chance for more tornado activity in that province this afternoon. We could see supercells in areas from Saskatoon to Regina and continuing on that track towards the U.S. border. Wind speeds could reach 120 kilometres per hour. Damage from winds can occur with winds speeds at 80 to 90 km/h. There is a risk of tornadoes along with tennis-ball-sized hail, torrential downpours and damaging winds this afternoon.

This storm system is expected to enter Manitoba in the evening hours. There is a chance of severe warnings in the southwest as well as the west-central Parklands area as the system sweeps across the province. These areas have a chance of seeing large hail, damaging winds and rain.

As the storm tracks east, the Interlake can expect damaging wind gusts late this evening. Environment Canada has issued marine warnings for strong winds for all of Lake Winnipeg, Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipegosis.

The impact of the storm on Winnipeg will be minimal. Winds are expected to pick up with only a 30 per cent chance of showers in the late evening/early morning.
