At approximately 7 am on Wednesday, there was a report of a suspicious fire on the side of a Kelowna road.
Police now believe drug traffickers may be to blame.
A liquid splashed on the snow on McCurdy Road in Rutland was discovered to be red phosphorous, a highly flammable material.
Spontaneous combustion may have been the source of flames that witnesses reported.
Police say one person stopped to stomp out the small blaze before the fire department arrived
It is believed the phosphorous was dumped by someone operating an illegal, methamphetamine drug lab.
A company that works with hazardous materials was called in to clean it up.
