Forest fire forces 250 campers to evacuate provincial park

A fire in a provincial park outside of Vernon forced the temporary evacuation of 250 campers today.

The fire broke at Ellison Provincial Park just after 4:30 this afternoon, quickly growing to two hectares in size. The park campground was quickly evacuated thereafter, along with those living on Okanagan Landing Road.

Dozens of Vernon firefighters and BC Forest Service personnel worked to contain the fire. As of 9 p.m. people were being allowed back into the campground.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, although it’s believed to been started by humans.
