A group is being assembled to investigate claims by a Weyburn, Sask. area couple that carbon dioxide is leaking onto their farm.
The International Performance Assessment Centre for Geologic Storage of Carbon Dioxide (IPAC-CO2) is assembling a group of international experts to investigate the complaints by Cameron and Jane Kerr.
On January 11, 2011, the Kerrs held a news conference in Regina where they demanded an investigation into changes on their farm near the Cenovus Energy carbon capture and storage site.
They suggest a carbon dioxide leak caused strange foam and algae growth in ponds on the farm. Animals have also been killed and the family was forced from their home in 2005. Changes started in surface and well water on their property in 2004, one year after carbon dioxide injection began in the area.
The review will look into whether it was caused by a leak and where it is coming from.
“The object is not to determine fault or point fingers,” Dr. Carmen Dybwab, IPAC’s CEO said in a release.
