Regina firefighters are looking into the cause of a fire at a newly built home in northwest Regina.
Around 9 p.m. Friday night crews were called to the home in the 4500 block of McMillan Drive. When they arrived on scene firefighters were faced with flames coming from the home’s basement and thick black smoke.
Neighbours rushed outside to see what was going on. Lianne Woulfe lives next door and left her home because of fear the flames could spread to her house.
“A gentleman came to the door and said that the house was on fire next door,” Woulfe said. “We just got everybody out of the house because the houses are so close together.”
That is a problem fire crews encounter frequently, said Angela Prawzick from the Fire Department.
“Certainly with the houses in many of our neighbourhoods here in Regina built fairly close together, anytime there is a fire, part of our operations is to treat what we call the exposures, the neighbouring homes,” Prawzick explained.
Fire crews were able to put the fire quickly before it spread to other homes. No one was home at the time. Officials say it is not being treated as suspicious.
