Early Stampede parade delights young patients at Children’s Hospital

CALGARY – There was a special Stampede treat for kids at the Alberta Children’s Hospital on Thursday.

Many of the children at the hospital aren’t able to leave the facility, even to enjoy the Calgary Stampede parade.

It’s for this reason that the hospital hosts a mini Stampede parade of their own, every year.

Patients at the pediatric facility were able to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Stampede parade on Thursday morning, as more than 30 floats passed by.

The parade featured Olympians, fiddlers, Star Wars characters and popular mascots – and members of Global Calgary’s own Morning News.

The event was co-hosted by Gord Gillies and former Children’s Hospital patient Aiden Campbell.

Leslie Horton walked the length of the parade for interviews with those in attendance, while Susanne Fox, Scott Fee and Jordan Witzel took part in the parade.

The Alberta Children’s Hospital is the largest public hospital for sick children in the prairie provinces, and is operated by Alberta Health Services.

When it opened in Calgary in 2006, it became the first free-standing pediatric facility to be built in Canada in more than 20 years.

The Stampede Parade will be held in downtown Calgary on Friday morning.
