Coronavirus outbreak: Toronto experiences $65 million financial pressure every week due to COVID-19 lockdown
WATCH: Toronto Mayor John Tory said on Friday that the city is experiencing an estimated financial pressure of $65 million each and every week the coronavirus crisis goes on. He said this pressure is driven by multiple closures and by things like reduced TTC revenue and relaxed parking regulations. Mayor Tory added that he is working with a group of city staff focused on maintaining the services Toronto residents rely on and on making sure the city won’t be asking residents to pay more money by proposing any additional tax increases. – Apr 3, 2020

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has created a COVID-19 case update page, where as of Tuesday morning it says 13 employees have tested positive for coronavirus so far.

The page also stated that 240 employees are currently in self-isolation.

“The TTC considers the health and well-being of our employees and customers our top priority,” the page reads at the top.

“Like all employers, we continue to monitor the impacts of COVID-19 on our workforce and take all appropriate action to ensure any reported positive cases are handled in conjunction with Toronto Public Health and our own Occupational Health and Safety Department.”

The TTC also provided a list breaking down which employees have tested positive, including a bus mechanic at Duncan Shop and a wheel-trans operator.

A TTC spokesperson said that revenues are also down, from $24 million a week to approximately $4.5 million to $5 million a week currently.

“Our focus is on continuing to keep the city moving,” Stuart Green said in a statement. “Not only because there are still hundreds of thousands of people using our system every day to get to their important jobs, medical appointments and to pick up essential goods and supplies.”

As of Tuesday morning, Ontario reported a total of 7,953 cases of coronavirus in the province. The death toll also rose to 334.
