Hanson wakes up Canada with songs from ‘Anthem’

TORONTO — The brothers who make up pop rock trio Hanson have managed to stick together as a band for more than two decades — and it has taken more than brotherly love.

“The main thing is the music really brings us together,” said Zac Hanson, the drummer and youngest member of the band at 27. “It’s something that we really have a passion for and if we didn’t like doing it anymore, we’d fall apart.”

He and his brothers Isaac, 32, and Taylor, 30, exploded onto the scene in 1996 with the infectious single “MMMBop” — a song that went on to reach No. 1 in 27 countries.

The brothers also performed two tracks from their new album, Anthem, including the first single “Get The Girl Back.” They explained the songs on the album are more rock ‘n’ roll than previous releases.

“This album is called Anthem is for a reason. It’s got some size to it,” explained Taylor. “Right from the top you hear this kind of punchiness. The guitar made a pretty big comeback.”

He called auto-tuning “just one of the many terrible tools” used in the music industry but singled out talented bands that have earned radio airplay, such as fun. and Maroon 5.

“We grew up listening to great songwriting and that’s always what we’re aspiring to,” said Taylor. “Trends come and go but ultimately you try to make records that last.”

Hanson is scheduled to tour across Canada starting Oct. 2 in Vancouver and stopping in Regina, Calgary, Sherwood Park, Saskatoon and Winnipeg. In November they will play Toronto, Montreal, Fredericton, Halifax, Summerside and Moncton.
