Police in Kelowna cordoned off part of Highway 33 on Saturday afternoon after a propane tank at a gas station started leaking.
The incident occurred at Highway 33 and Dougall Road North.
The Kelowna Fire Department said traffic along Highway 33 was closed in both directions to prevent any possible ignition sources.
“We received a 911 report of a propane leak,” Kelowna Fire Department platoon captain Tim Light told Global News.
He said propane was leaking, crews set up equipment to protect the area and that some downwind businesses were evacuated.
Light said attempts were underway to drain the propane tank. He said there was a propane truck on scene, but that it was full and it had to go back and empty its tank before returning to drain the leaking tank.
Light said at the time they didn’t know why the tank was leaking, but that slight winds seemingly helped the propane vapours.
