TORONTO — Gary David Goldberg, who created two TV sitcoms starring Canada’s Michael J. Fox, died Sunday after a battle with brain cancer. He was 68.
“RIP Gary David Goldberg,” tweeted Modern Family executive producer Steve Levitan. “One of the greats in this business and in this world.”
Hollywood producer Frank Marshall tweeted: ” We have lost one of the greats, GARY DAVID GOLDBERG, gifted writer, dad, husband, family man and friend. We will miss his stories. R.I.P.”

Goldberg was executive producer of both Family Ties, which ran from 1982 to 1989, and Spin City, which ran from 1996 to 2002. In the ’70s he was producer of the short-lived series Lou Grant and The Tony Randall Show.
His film credits include 2005’s Must Love Dogs starring Canadian actor Christopher Plummer.
Goldberg, who was born in Brooklyn, earned seven Emmy nominations during his career and won two.
He is survived by his wife Diana Meehan and daughters Shana and Cailin.
