An extreme cold warning that was issued for much of northern and northeastern Alberta Monday was lifted for the Edmonton area late Tuesday afternoon.
On Monday, Environment Canada issued the warnings following a dip in temperatures across the region.
“The snow that fell overnight last night into this morning was associated with a cold front that was pushing through ahead of a dome of cold arctic air, which will sit over the area into tomorrow,” Sara Hoffman, Environment Canada meteorologist, said Monday.
Edmonton reached a low of -27 C overnight Monday, according to Environment Canada, with wind chills making it feel like -32 at times within the city.
Outlying areas around the city saw wind chill values in the -40 region, according to Environment Canada.
Other areas in the northern and northeastern parts of the province also saw wind chills as cold as -40.
On Tuesday morning, school bus service was cancelled for several school districts in Alberta due to the cold weather.
Saddle Lake, Goodfish Lake and Division buses were cancelled for Ashmont School on Tuesday morning. The Division buses were expected to run Tuesday afternoon, assistant principal Denise Warchola said Tuesday morning.
All Aspen View Public School bus routes were cancelled for Tuesday.
Elk Island Public Schools cancelled bus service for Tuesday morning, but school officials said buses would be back up and running by the afternoon.
School buses for St. Paul Education schools were also cancelled for the morning only. Buses will run in the afternoon and all schools remained open Tuesday.
OPK School in Wabasca, Alta., was closed on Tuesday due to the cold temperatures.
Environment Canada said it is not expected to be a long-lasting cold and temperatures will soon improve.
The extreme cold warning was dropped for Edmonton and much of central Alberta before noon Tuesday, but remained in place for the far northwestern region of the province and areas along the eastern border.
“Luckily by Wednesday we have those warm gusty westerly winds that should warm things up again and bring us back to above normal temperatures,” said Hoffman.
